Why I Believe in Community Over Competition (And How It Shapes My Photography Business)

In the photography world, it’s easy to feel like you have to outshine the next person. But I’ve built my business on something different: community over competition. Whether I’m photographing an elopement in the Colorado mountains, working with couples in Sedona, or second shooting with another photographer, one thing stays true—I believe in collaboration, connection, and cheering each other on.

This mindset doesn’t just shape how I work with other photographers—it shows up in every client session I do, and soon, it’ll be part of the mentorship and consulting work I’ll be offering for photographers who are just getting started.

1. I Support My Fellow Photographers—Because We're Stronger Together

Photography isn’t a one-size-fits-all gig. We all bring something unique to the table, and I love being part of a community where we celebrate those differences. I regularly second shoot for other photographers, step in as a backup when someone needs help, and genuinely enjoy seeing my peers succeed. We’re not competitors—we’re collaborators. Whether it’s a wedding day or a styled shoot, we’re all working toward the same goal: capturing something meaningful.

2. I Love Helping New Photographers Grow

When I was getting started, I had a million questions—and I didn’t always know who to ask. That’s why I’m passionate about mentoring new photographers, offering advice on things like website design, posing, branding, editing workflows, and how to create a great client experience.

Soon, I’ll be offering photography mentorships and consultations to help newer creatives find their voice, build confidence, and grow their businesses in a way that feels aligned. Because let’s be honest—this job is hard enough. You shouldn’t have to figure it out alone.

3. Clients, You Benefit From This Too

If you're someone looking to book with me—this part is for you. My commitment to community and collaboration doesn’t just benefit other photographers. It benefits you, too. When you hire a photographer who is always learning, networking, and investing in their creative growth, you get someone who shows up with fresh ideas, deeper experience, and a bigger network to pull from.

Need a backup plan for bad weather? Vendor referrals? A calm presence on a chaotic day? You’re getting someone who’s seen it all and has a whole crew of trusted pros I can call on—because community matters.

4. I Attend and Host Styled Shoots, Workshops, and Industry Events

I believe in staying inspired—and part of that means stepping out of my usual routine. I regularly attend workshops and styled shoots, both to stay sharp and to connect with other creatives. I’ve attended events like WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International), where the energy is electric and the learning never stops.

I also host styled shoots where photographers can come together, try new techniques, and push themselves creatively. These are some of the most fun and fulfilling parts of my job, and they keep my creative fire lit—which benefits every couple, brand, or creative I photograph.

5. Collaboration = Better Art, Better Business, Better Humans

At the end of the day, believing in community over competition isn’t just good business—it’s good life. Whether I’m supporting a fellow photographer, mentoring someone new to the industry, or photographing a couple who just wants to feel seen and celebrated, this value shows up in every part of what I do.

If you're looking for a photographer who will bring good vibes, tons of experience, and a community-first mindset to your session—you’re in the right place.

And if you’re a photographer who wants help getting started, refining your workflow, or building something that feels truly you—keep an eye out for my mentorship and consulting offerings launching soon. I can’t wait to help you grow. xo Rachel
